Biographical/historical note

In 1923, North Carolina State College’s (later North Carolina State University) Department of Physical Education was established upon authorization of the Board of Trustees. In 1997 the department became part of the Division of Student Affairs. In 2012, the Department of Physical Education changed its name to the Department of Health and Exercise Studies. Health and Exercise Studies currently works closely with the Departments of Campus Recreation and Carmichael Complex Facilities and Operations. The Department of Health and Exercise Studies now operates under the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, not the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The primary mission of the Department of Health and Exercise Studies is to educate students regarding the benefits of living a healthy and physically active lifestyle; provide opportunities for sport, fitness and leisure, and professional preparation in the areas of coaching education, fitness leadership, health, and outdoor education and to serve NC State students, the University, and the community.

All students attending North Carolina State University (in 2010) are required to complete two Physical Education courses to meet the University General Education Requirement (GER). One course must be a Fitness and Wellness course (Fitness and Wellness courses are those found in the PE 100-level series). This collection documents the creation of this requirement, including early syllabi for PE 100.

Scope/content

This collection contains records that document the activities and functions of the North Carolina State University College of Humanities and Social Science’s Department of Health and Exercise Studies (formerly Department of Physical Education) from 1937 to 2019. Types of records in this collection include syllabi for Physical Education 100, informational pamphlets, correspondence, calendars, bulletins, meeting minutes, and handbooks. The records in the Physical Education Course Information folders document the creation of PE 100 as a University requirement. Of particular note in the Department Internal Documents folder is a series of correspondence dated from 1974 that were written in response to Title IX. These letters contain the subject “Dealing with Sex Discrimination in Intercollegiate Athletics.” Also, this collection contains programs for the Annual Big Four Sports Day from 1985 to 1997, when student athletes from NC State University, Wake Forest University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill would compete in "extramural" activities such as badminton, basketball, tennis, raquetball, among others. There are also many folders of faculty meeting minutes.
