The North Carolina State University Fort Bragg/Pope Air Force Base Branch Records contains correspondence, meeting minutes, course catalogues, financial records, pamphlets, and student rosters documenting the proposal, implementation, and phasing out of the Master’s Degree Program in Adult and Community College Education at Fort Bragg. Materials range in date from 1965-1981.

Biographical/historical note

Beginning in or before 1965, NC State University offered a limited number of graduate courses at their Fort Bragg location before introducing a Master’s Degree Program in Adult and Community College Education in 1973.

In the wake of the intensification in demand for the racial integration of Fayetteville State Teachers College and its upgrade to a university (Fayetteville State University), NC State University decided to transfer its undergraduate program to Fayetteville State University in 1973. However, NC State University continued to run its graduate courses at Fort Bragg until 1982.

In 1979, NC State University decided to begin phasing out the Master’s Degree Program, admitting no new students and scheduling the spring semester of 1982 as the final semester of the program. Local colleges had established equivalent master’s degree programs in adult and community college education so there was no longer demand for NC State University to operate a program in the Fort Bragg location.
