Contained in this collection are Melvin's diploma (1913) and a certificate (1912) appointing him first lieutenant of the cadets. Also included is a handwritten note with biographical information about Melvin. It is undated but must be from a much later time period.

Robert Tolar Melvin was from Bladen County. At 17 he taught in a one-room school. He was later a postal carrier. He attended North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and graduated in 1913 with the degree bachelor of science in agriculture.
